Licensing

Generated licenses are required for on-premise DSim use. There are two types of on-prem DSim licenses.

  1. Free Individual License: intended for individual use only to run a single concurrent (one at a time) simulation. Licenses are administered from your DSim Cloud Portal.
  2. Altair Units License: paid license to run multiple concurrent simulations. Licenses are administered from your Altair License Manager.

On-prem licenses are not required to access Altair DSim Cloud features, including running simulations in the cloud. DSim Cloud has a usage-based billing model and is administered from your DSim Cloud Portal. See Billing for details.

Switching Licenses

To switch between your Free Individual License and your Altair Units License:

1. In DSim Studio, click the Open Settings icon beside DSIM STUDIO.

2. In the Settings tab that opens, look for License Model under User.

3. To use your Free Individual License, select it from the drop-down menu.

4. To use your Altair Units License, select it from the drop-down menu.

4. Wait for the setting to update and close the Settings tab. The license will apply to all future simulations run inside DSim Studio and the DSim Studio terminal.

To administer your Altair Units License, refer to your Altair License Manager (you must be logged into Altair One).

NOTE: The rest of this document refers to your Free Individual License.

2. Give your license a descriptive name and click Generate.

The creation and expiration times of your generated license are displayed.

Installing Licenses

The generated license can be installed automatically or manually.

Automatic Installation

Automatic installation of the license requires DSim Studio.

1. Click the Install license using DSim Studio icon.

2. If required, allow the app to open Visual Studio Code.

3. Check the status of your license under Viewing Licenses.

By default, the licenses are installed to the following paths:

  • Windows: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\metrics-ca\dsim-license.json
  • Linux: $HOME/metrics-ca/dsim-license.json

Manual Installation

Manual installation of the license can be done if you want to copy the license to use it on another machine. You can use the same license on multiple machines, but only one machine at a time can run DSim.

1. Click the Download license icon.

The license file dsim-license.json will be downloaded to your default Downloads folder.

2. Move or copy the license file dsim-license.json to the following location on the machine you wish to use DSim and have already installed it:

  • Linux: $HOME/metrics-ca/dsim-license.json

3. On that machine, check the status of your license under Viewing Licenses.

Managing Licenses

Only one license can be valid at a time. Currently, licenses are valid for 90 days. To obtain a new license, you must first revoke the current one.

1. Click Revoke license beside your current license.

2. Confirm that you want to revoke your current license.

3. Check the status of your licenses under Viewing Licenses.

Proxy Servers

As of DSim 20240422.4.0, licensing supports proxy servers. If you use a proxy server, set the environment variable https_proxy to the address and port of your proxy server. For example, for a proxy server that is is configured on the local host to use port 8080, set the https_proxy variable to the string https://127.0.0.1:8080.
